VMIZ Traffic Management and Traffic Information Centre, Vienna

The VMIZ traffic management and traffic information centre operated by ASFINAG – the company that plans, finances, maintains, and levies tolls on Austria’s major
roads – is located in the area of Austria with the highest traffic volumes, sandwiched between the A2 and A23 and surrounded by industrial estates. The building is constructed on three levels, which the architect Adolf Krischanitz describes as follows: 'A green fence runs along the boundary of the property at ground-floor height, turning under the building at the parking area and defining a green space that contains the structure as a horizontal and vertical framing device.
The fence and building together produce a green pavilion that acts as a counterweight to the emissions-filled environment, doubling as a kind of substitute landscape element. Emerging from this piece of ‘artificial nature’, the building is crowned with a viewing floor constructed in glass, which sits above the level of the two motorways and acts as both a vantage point and an illuminated sign for the company name.'
