Earth Cubes on the Vienna Outer-Ring Motorway, Vienna, NOE
Landscape design
During the planning of the Vienna outer-ring motorway, it became evident that the various cuttings and the general lowering of extensive sections would produce a large quantity of excess mass and that moving and dumping this mass would cause considerable damage to the environment. The idea of creating “earth cubes” gave the option of placing large, archaic-looking earth formations that would represent part of the natural topography of the landscape and give the motorway a visible profile from both near and far.
